Day 68-74: Spain, Cartagena

Hooray, the sun is shining! The clouds and our argument have been left behind in yesterday and we’re up and raring to go. It’s time to go sightseeing.

In celebration of the wonderful sunny day, I’ve made us a sunshine breakfast. Pan tomate y jamon – our absolute, hands down, toe-curling current favourite.

Fortified, we set out for a quick 1km walk to the bus stop and chug along the main roads and back roads and through the suburbs of Cartagena to finally reach the bus station and our last and final stop to start our sightseeing day.

Having chatted about it on the bus, we’ve decided on a 4 attraction multiple ticket for €12 each and as it is valid for 15 days, we’re in no rush to use them up.

It’s been a very slow week for news as we’ve turned down the tempo to Spanish time, mooched around sightseeing in this beautiful part of the country, done all the mundane, boring stuff like admin and laundry…. and I’ve taken a mini-break from blogging as well….

But we haven’t taken a break from photos.  So you can still see our sightseeing in Cartagena and what a beautiful city it is.

There’s evidence that Cartagena has been inhabited for over 1.3 MILLION years. Yup, you heard correctly! Evidence has been found of individuals from the genus Homo living here.

But it was it’s harbour and port that designated it as one of the best in the Western Mediterranean and that put Cartagena on the map. The city rose and fell with the Romans, tumbled in and out of the Middle Ages to where it is today, as the capital of the maritime province of Cartagena.

A lunch at the fabulous Nuestra Tradicion stumbled upon up an alley in Cartagena.

The Roman Amphitheatre

The Romans were building these magnificent structures…..meanwhile we were living in caves and mud huts.
