Day 47&48: Spain, L’Estartit (Costa Brava)

Day 47

The storm arrived during the night and it’s blowing a gale.

The campsite roads are flooded this morning and the gorgeous Mr T is shin deep in water (I daren’t try and wade through in case I disappear and drown!). The amount that is falling just can’t be absorbed, even by the dry ground.

It’s warm but wet, wet, wet (is there a song in there somewhere?).

Unable to go outside for the heavy rain (it never feels like “stuck” or “trapped” just….unable to go outside), tonight we’ve re-discovered the sublime joy of a Spanish Tortilla cooked but just so that the centre is still gooey.

We first tasted this in Barcelona in 2014 and fell in love with it along with a glass or 2 of chilled Albarino white wine. We have never forgotten the white wine (or indeed given it up) but since have only eaten and cooked the fully cooked variety of tortilla. Somehow it just slipped off our radar.

I saw it again just before we left to start this adventure on the BBC2 series in Remarkable Places to Eat being served at Nestor’s Sports Bar in San Sebastian. Tonight I re-created it. OMG! You really have to try it – I’ve included the recipe for you. It is really easy to make, uses very few ingredients (you know my opinion of the simplest food being the best). You just need a little patience to get the potatoes cooked properly.

Buen provecho!

Day 48

The rain hasn’t let up and if we thought the storm from yesterday was bad, this one has escalated beyond what I can describe….and I’m seldom lost for words!  The lightning and thunder are biblical, raging in an almost continuous cycle and the air is filled with electricity that is making our hairs stand up on end.

It is, by it’s shear noise and ferocity, both frightening and pretty bloody awesome.

This video taken at 3:40am (Yes!! 3:40AM) just shows the lightning. I cut the thunder out as it came in at the end because my phone speaker couldn’t cope and was clipping the sound. (Depending on your browser, you may need to click on the 3 dots next to the speaker to download it, to watch it. I’m trying to sort this out, sorry!)

It was so loud, we couldn’t hear each other even when we were shouting.

But by mid-afternoon it’s all finally calming down and we are able to catch a few hours sleep from those lost during the night.

Is this how androids dream of electric sheep?
